Hi, I’m Georgie…
I’m a mum of two, a sailor, a writer – and I just love being on the water! My hope is to pass on this love of watersports to my kids.
AfloatWithTheKids.com documents our experiences and I hope we inspire other families to get afloat too – because small splashes lead to big adventures!
It’s something I’m hugely passionate about. While my career as a sailing magazine editor has allowed me to spend 20 years covering the elite aspects of the sport, along the way I’ve taken every opportunity to encourage more people to try watersports, from coaching junior sailing squads to contributing to industry research on participation; I even met my now-husband while we were teaching sailing and helping to establish the sport at a sailing centre in China.
My first taste of watersports was through sailing in my early teens. I went on to compete at national and international level, winning silver at the World Team Racing Championships. Along the way, I’ve tried just about every other watersport you can think of – paddleboarding, windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing, diving, bodyboarding, kayaking, kitesurfing, white-water rafting – so I know first hand just how much fun these sports are!
From our early days as parents, Hubby and I realised that if we wanted to continue to pursue the water based activities we love, things would need to change. But just because getting afloat isn’t quite as straightforward when you have small people in tow, doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
I also know that it if you haven’t tried watersports before, it can sometimes be hard to know where to start, but that the rewards once you are on the water are limitless, and that whatever your age or ability there is always a way to give it a go.
And giving it a go is always the first step! That’s exactly where we are at right now with our two young children – I’m excited to see where this journey takes our family.
So, here’s to getting afloat with the kids… I hope you find inspiration in reading about our adventures!
